Nonprofit Sober Living in Pittsburgh

Why Recovery Housing

Getting Sober Is One Thing. Staying Sober Is Another

Treatment ends. Then you need somewhere to live where staying clean is the normal thing to do. That’s what a recovery house is for.

New Beginnings runs recovery houses for adults in Pittsburgh who are done using and want a real shot at keeping it that way. The houses are AA and NA based. You live with other people doing the same work, you go to meetings, you keep a job or go to school, and you come home to a house where nobody is using.

  • A House Where Nobody Uses

Every house is substance free, with random drug screens. That’s what keeps the house safe for everyone living in it.

  • People Who Get It

Your housemates are in recovery too. The person across the kitchen table has been where you are, and that counts for a lot.

  • Structure You Can Lean On

House rules, a weekly house meeting, chores, and a curfew give your days a shape while you rebuild the rest.

How Our Houses Work

Our Homes

Houses for Men in Four Neighborhoods. One House for Women

New Beginnings runs separate recovery houses for men and women in established Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Every house is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs and certified by WestPARR.

A Normal Week

Most of Recovery Is Just a Normal Week

The house gives you a place to come back to. The rest of the day is yours: work, school, meetings, court dates, family, and everything else that goes into a normal week.

New Beginnings is housing, not treatment. If you’re in counseling, on medication, or seeing a doctor, you keep doing that with your own providers. We make sure you have a stable place to live while you do.

Who Is Behind This

Run by a Counselor Who Has Done This Since 1999

I’m Susan Rua. I’ve worked in addiction counseling since 1999, and I’ve owned and run recovery houses in Pittsburgh for more than ten years. I started New Beginnings because people leaving treatment needed somewhere decent to go, and there weren’t enough of those places.

New Beginnings is a Pittsburgh 501(c)(3) public charity. Our houses are licensed by Pennsylvania DDAP and certified by WestPARR, and you can check all of that yourself.

Getting In

Start With a Phone Call

You don’t need a referral, and you don’t need to be coming straight from treatment. Call, or send the short application, and we’ll talk. Keep medical and legal details off the website. We’ll ask for what we need.

  1. Call or Apply

Call 412-628-0403 or send the short application. Tell us whether you’re asking about the men’s houses or the women’s house.

  2. We Talk

We call you back, ask a few questions, and tell you what’s open, what it costs, and what the house expects.

  3. Move In

If it’s a fit and a bed is open, you get the address, the move-in list, and a date.
